Volunteering – building a fire in your heart
Why consider volunteering at DenverWorks? Why consider volunteering anywhere? We live in a fast-paced world and the last thing that many of us want is one more commitment in our over-loaded schedules. The most natural thing in the world is to hunker down and protect our private interests by making sure that our own little world is safe and well-ordered. But consider these words from Max Lucado: Life has rawness and wonder. Pursue it. Hunt for it. Don’t listen to the whines of those who have settled for a second rate life and want you to do the same. Your goal is not to live long; it’s to live. Jesus says the options are clear. To be safe, you can build a fire in the hearth, stay inside, and keep warm and dry. You can’t get hurt if you never get out, right? You can’t be criticized for what you don’t try, right? You can’t fail if you don’t take a stand, right? . . . So don’t try it. Take the safe route. Instead of building a fire in your hearth, however, you can build a fire in your heart. Follow God’s impulses. Adopt a child. Move overseas. Teach a class. Change careers. Run for office. Make a difference. Sure it isn’t safe, but what is? You think staying inside is safe? Jesus disagrees. “Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it.” Reclaim the curiosity of your childhood. Just because you’re near the top of the hill doesn’t mean you’ve passed your peak.
These words challenged me ten years ago and my life has never been the same. I have found the joy of leaving my safe world behind and plunging into other people’s lives – through my professional work at DenverWorks and my volunteer work. Making a difference in people’s lives brings my own life meaning, purpose, and joy. I wouldn’t trade it for all the safety and security in the world.
Will you consider building a fire in your heart by volunteering at DenverWorks? Please contact me at 303.433.0300 ext. 103 or dbrannan@denverworks.org to schedule your personal volunteer orientation.
